Three Appalleds, Applause and an Amen

"That's just like, your opinion, man!"

Happy spring!

Like many of you, I was appalled by the unmasking behavior we saw last week on airplanes. My joke was "who knew that the first thing we'd see when the masks came off would be the a$$holes?" Sigh. So I wrote this article, to try to bring us closer to compassion and sensitivity to individuality and vulnerability.

To Mask or Not to Mask When Masking is Not Mandatory | Psychology Today, April 26, 2022

And then I was appalled by watching 2 episodes of Couples Therapy on Showtime, which took me to a review in the NYT, which took me to a review of Lori Gottlieb, LMFT's book and advice column for The Atlantic .... where I got to be appalled again. That's three appalleds in one week, which is not a record, but someone should seriously keep track, lol. So I wrote this. (Maybe that would be a great band name: Superfan and the Apostles of the Appalled")

"My Dad Is Trying to Force His Way Into My Life": A Different Take | Psychology Today, April 26, 2022.

There is a spectrum from Instagram "therapy" to advice columnist to docuseries therapists to ... hell. All of which are different from actual therapy, but which are all paving the way with good intentions, I'm sure. I mean not just the clamor for $$$ and fame, right???!!!

Yes, PT published both articles on the same day, which gives me some hope that my appalls are getting through. At least this week. I'll keep you posted.

In the applause but not appalled category, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Carolyn Chen, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, about her new book on how Silicon Valley is turning work into religion, to the detriment of community and ethics. That Zoom interview is now on YouTube, and linked in this article:

Mindfulness in Silicon Valley: Is Work Becoming Religion? | Psychology Today, April 11, 2022

The through-line in these articles is that all involve top-down opinions, decisions, and priorities, and thus ignore individual and cultural specificity. The extreme danger is having people in charge who grow less sensitive to people’s individuality and feelings. Gee where have I seen that.

Over on East Wind, I got to wax poetic on the confirmation of soon-to-be Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. This goes beyond applause to hallelujah. Let's have more of that in the world.

Can I get an AMEN!!!

Warmly,
Ravi

Amen!!!
