Hi all,

Thanks for staying with me!  It's been a great summer of writing and events!  I hope to have some publication news for you in the near future.

  1. LitCrawl reading, part of LitQuake 2016 (Saturday, October 15 at 8:30 pm)
  2. Letter to Young Activists (and others interested in self-care and healing in these trying times)
  3. More Pacific Heart blog posts of note (especially for new subscribers), including an article on Rome, Georgia
  4. Some great book picks from recent readings

1.  LitCrawl Reading Saturday October 15th

My good friend Shizue Siegel put together an anthology of writing about the Fillmore and Japantown districts.  Several of the contributors will be doing a reading on Saturday October 15, 2016.  You can pick up a copy of the book then, or at Eastwind Books in Berkeley, or directly from Pease Press:  Standing Strong:  Fillmore and Japantown

LitQuake, the fantastic weeklong literary festival in SF and the Bay Area is coming up October 7-15th.  I hope to catch several events.  Check out the full sched here!

LitCrawl (schedule here) is a pub crawl from the North Mission to the South, with hourlong readings beginning at 6 pm.
Cafe La Boheme at 3318 24th street (nr Mission)

8:30pm to 9:30pm on Saturday October 15th.

Celebrate the enduring spirit of African American and Japanese American communities in San Francisco's gentrifying Western Addition with editor Shizue Seigel and community writers
Featuring Sandra Bass, Ravi Chandra, Charles Dixon, Lyndsay Ellis, Jennifer Hasegawa, Roji Oyama, Queennandi Xsheba Shabazz, and Shizue Seigel.

Chinese for Progressive Action asked me to speak to their summer interns about self care and mental health issues.  Here is an essay adapted from that talk.  I hope it helps you on the long journey from head to heart.

3.  Pacific Heart Blog Posts of note, especially for those new to the newsletter and my writing

4.  Book picks
I loved Tsering Wangmo Dhompa's Coming Home to Tibet.  Here's my interview with Dhompa.
Other books I enjoyed recently:
The Song Poet, by Kao Kalia Yang.  (Interview forthcoming at CAAM's website)  A poignant memoir of a Hmong father and family, from wartorn Laos to facing crises as an American immigrant and refugee.
The Narcissism Epidemic, by Jean Twenge and W. Keith Campbell.  Important book that details the rise in narcissism over the last few decades, as well as thoroughly (and often hilariously) documenting the ways superficial and narcissistic values have permeated American culture, from vanity to social media to emphasis on wealth, status and easy credit.
A Fearless Heart, by Thupten Jinpa.  The Dalai Lama's translator lays out a wonderful program to cultivate compassion for oneself and others.  The perfect antidote to The Narcissism Epidemic!

Thanks, and have a great October!

Ravi
